Route 9 and Hammond St. Traffic update

The CHA recently obtained the following information from Newton officials:

The contractor doing the work on Route 9 (between Hammond Pond Parkway to just west of Langley) will be working nights this week. The work includes the placement of what is called the “sign bridge”. This is the structure that spans across all lanes of Route 9 that the new signage is attached. This sign bridge work does require the temporary shut down of Route 9 for 5 to 10 minutes (shut down approved by MassDOT). The closure will take place sometime between the hours of 2:00 AM and 3:00 AM. While on nights the contractor will also be completing the drainage work in the area of the new Chestnut Hill Square complex.

Work on Route 9 is expected to be completed by fall of 2013, possibly even late summer.

At the request of CHA members, city official will discuss adding a police detail at the intersection of Hammond and Route 9 during the lane closures during peak afternoon hours. However, with all of the construction activities around they anticipate some difficulty getting a detail officer.
