Hammond St. traffic update

On Friday, August 30th, Gloria Gavris, President of the CHA attended  a meeting  at the corner of Rt. 9 & Hammond Street to review and discuss traffic concerns on Hammond Street, in/out of the CVS parking lot and on Rt 9. In attendance were Alderman Ruthanne Fuller, Alderman Lisle Baker, Brookline Selectmen, Representatives from Chestnut Hill Neighborhood Association (CHA’s Brookline counterpart), WS Development (owners of The Street), Brookline & Newton Traffic & Parking Officers and the Department of Transportation.

Following the meeting, she reported:

–  WS Development has plans before the Town of Brookline to widen the Entrance/Exit at CVS and will include a pedestrian sidewalk.  This issue is presently before the Brookline Zoning Board of Appeals.
–  Brookline will discuss the possibility of removing 3 parking meters along Hammond Street to allow for more width on the roadway for cars to pass.
– More signage will occur along Hammond Street to “Not Block the Box” with painting of the roadway to ease flow of traffic going in/out of the CVS driveway.
– MA Dept. of Transportation will slightly alter the timing of the lights on Route 9 by Chestnut Hill Square on September 15th (?)
– MA Dept. of Transportation and Brookline Traffic will continue to monitor the flow of traffic .As many Chestnt Hill residents know, this Entrance/Exit at CVS has always been problematic, with traffic stalled all the way up Hammond Street toward Beacon.  Unfortunately this issue is within the jurisdiction of the Town of Brookline and our government officials will continue to communicate and work with them to  seek coordination and assistance to alleviate traffic and congestion concerns.

Route 9 and Hammond St. Traffic update

The CHA recently obtained the following information from Newton officials:

The contractor doing the work on Route 9 (between Hammond Pond Parkway to just west of Langley) will be working nights this week. The work includes the placement of what is called the “sign bridge”. This is the structure that spans across all lanes of Route 9 that the new signage is attached. This sign bridge work does require the temporary shut down of Route 9 for 5 to 10 minutes (shut down approved by MassDOT). The closure will take place sometime between the hours of 2:00 AM and 3:00 AM. While on nights the contractor will also be completing the drainage work in the area of the new Chestnut Hill Square complex.

Work on Route 9 is expected to be completed by fall of 2013, possibly even late summer.

At the request of CHA members, city official will discuss adding a police detail at the intersection of Hammond and Route 9 during the lane closures during peak afternoon hours. However, with all of the construction activities around they anticipate some difficulty getting a detail officer.

BC project at 2150 Comm ave

Announcement from Boston College:

“The BC Task Force has scheduled three upcoming meetings:

* Thursday, May 9

* Wednesday, May 29

* Tuesday, June 18

All will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the The Brighton Marine Health Center, 77 Warren Street, Brighton. The main agenda item is the community benefits discussion, and given BC’s upcoming filing for the 2150 Commonwealth Avenue residence hall, we will also have time to discuss that process.

Please note that BC has filed an IMPNF to renew its Institutional Master Plan and to amend it to account for the differences between the proposed residence hall and the project approved in the IMP. BC has also filed a Project Notification Form to begin Large Project Review of the residence hall. The documents are available at the links in the text above. Comments should be submitted to me by June 3, 2013.”
